December’s slowdown was expected, but it reinforces how differently the contract and permanent markets have evolved over the past year. Contract recruitment continues to demonstrate its importance as a flexible workforce solution, particularly as organisations remain cautious about long-term commitments.

Permanent hiring has softened at points, yet year-on-year stability suggests confidence has not disappeared, only become more selective. At the same time, stronger conversion rates across both markets indicate that the quality of candidates has not been adversely affected by greater use of AI across markets and when hiring decisions are made, they are decisive. As we look ahead, success for recruiters will increasingly hinge on quality delivery, increased productivity enhanced by technology, and adaptability rather than volume alone.
