Vacancysoft & APSCo South East Regional Labour Market Trends Report | May 2026

The South East labour market entered 2026 in a stronger position than many employers expected at the end of last year. While businesses remain cautious around cost pressures, borrowing conditions and slowing consumer activity, professional hiring demand across the region has continued to recover, supported by investment in technology, infrastructure and commercially focused functions.

Much of the hiring momentum is now being driven by sectors tied to long-term structural growth rather than cyclical expansion. Technology, engineering and industrial employers are increasing recruitment activity at a significantly faster pace than the wider market, while sales hiring has also accelerated as firms prioritise revenue generation and business development. At the same time, weaker conditions in real estate, retail, and some marketing functions suggest employers are becoming increasingly selective about where headcount investments are directed.
